UPDATE (September 24, 3:15 pm ET): The 49ers have announced that Jimmy Garoppolo has torn his ACL and will be out for the season.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has invested heavily in the reserve quarterback position during the Carson Wentz era so far, creating a ripple effect throughout the NFL: Teams with playoff hopes pay a premium for someone be ready. And that paid Philadelphia last season …The Eagles have shown the modern NFL that a brilliant system and a quarterback game just above the replacement level can cancel the loss of a franchise signalman.
On Sunday, the 49ers lost their quarterback, probably for the season. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has prepared the fan base for a funeral, despite a confirmation MRI coming on Monday. He and John Lynch trusted C. J. Beathard, who had already started five franchise games as a rookie (123 out of 224, 1,430 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions). Beathard, probably, will be better than he was a year ago and could possibly handle a match adequately. Does it have the benefit of a premium backup of type Foles?
Quarterbacks of Shanahan are present throughout the NFL in reserve positions currently, some of which could likely be sold at an attractive price. Obviously, the 49ers are not going to tackle quarterback Falcons Matt Schaub, who was with the coach in Houston in 2008 and 2009. Donovan McNabb and Rex Grossman are out of the league. Just like John Beck. Kirk Cousins is not available. Connor Shaw is offside and Johnny Manziel can not be part of the starting lineup in Canada.
That leaves Brian Hoyer in New England and Robert Griffin III in Baltimore. Among those not directly from the Shanahan tree are Josh McCown, newly formed Sam Bradford, and Tyrod Taylor, who may be about to be established, among others.
Griffin has had a decent pre-season in Baltimore and, in Shanahan's wildest dreams, could be a quick patch-to-toker that also features a much different set of weapons than the future opponents are currently preparing. But it is highly unlikely that he sees a greater advantage in visiting an eventful past than helping the young quarter he has already spent time and effort preparing for. How long would it take to prepare someone like Taylor or Bradford, even if the 49ers were able to take them off?
The team is approaching a decision point that will almost certainly dictate the rest of its season. Sitting at 1-2 after three weeks and watching a series of brutal games to come (at the Chargers, Cardinals, Packers and Rams), they will effectively choose to play the rest of the season or put themselves into a better position to face tough games and eventually enjoy a still fairly weak division beyond Los Angeles.
For Lynch, it's hard not to feel the pressure between a rock and a difficult place. After putting Garoppolo in place, the team gained momentum and accumulated the offensive with a handful of mercenaries who fit in perfectly with Shanahan's system. Maintaining the status quo could mean the intention to pack it for 2019, while holding hearings for role plays in the Garoppolo offensive in a year. Making a move could cost valuable draft capital and hinder Beathard's development, but could also maximize talent and propel the team next season on a positive note.
This is so when a quarter of deductible is lost for the year. Some teams go to the water, some teams get bigger and some teams simply pass the test knowing how difficult the production is to reproduce.
