The Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 on Monday night for their 106th win of the season, a new record of 118 years of history.
The new mark allowed Boston to surpass the 105 games won by the 1912 team to win the World Series, although this is in a schedule of 154 games. Monday's Sox victory came in their 157th game of the year.
The win also allowed the Red Sox to have the advantage of the home game throughout the season, putting Boston out of reach of Houston Astros, AL West leader.
Historically, obtaining the best record in baseball bodes well for the Sox, who won the World Series in five years, while they held at least a share of the record (1903, 1912, 1915, 2007 and 2013). They lost the fall classic in 1946 in seven games.
The team with the best record has reached the last two years of the World Series: the Cubs won everything in 2016 and the Dodgers lost in the seventh game last year.
The Sox could set another record in regular season for manager Alex Cora. Boston is only three victories in equalizing the 1961 Yankees for the most wins of a rookie team.
