INDIANAPOLIS – Attacking the line of scrimmage and being disruptive is what represents the defensive front of the Indianapolis Colts.
With this attitude always at the forefront, it is not surprising to see that two of their most productive players are currently leading the NFL in chips for loss.
In three games, Colts defensive end Margus Hunt is first with eight tackles for the loss, and rookie linebacker Darius Leonard is next with six tackles.
On Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, Leonard had five tackles for the loss and Hunt added three.
Between the two, they had 51 tackles (14 for the defeat), six sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumbles recovered and three ruptures in three parts.
For Hunt, the former Cincinnati Bengals' second-round pick has had a career year to date, while the 31-year-old has already set a career high with his three sacks.
"You know, just the hard work on his part, he works very hard with him and with a good complementary game," said Colts head coach Frank Reich Monday. "You know, this is not a one-man show on the defensive front, they run stunts and matches together, so it's really these four guys who are doing well together, and Margus has been very productive. "
Leonard's 41 tackles are currently leading the NFL, and both players are tied for the third bag with three each.
Last week, Leonard was named defensive player of the week and NFL rookie of the week for his week 2 effort against the Washington Redskins. In the Colts' 21-9 win, he had 19 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.
After the outstanding performance, Colts head coach Frank Reich spoke about his rookie star.
"The guy is amazing, just the lever he's played with, the length, the ability," said Reich. "You can not ask for a better start and a better young leader than what he shows us and gives us now."
Leonard also has an impact on his veteran teammates.
"Great big guy," said defensive tackle Al Woods. "As I said earlier, he's coming early and he's leaving late, he's always asking the right questions, he's not afraid to ask a question, he's just a guy who's really humble. am here to play, point blank, point. "
Hunt and Leonard, however, are not the only players in the Colts' defensive front to make an impact. Defensive end Jabaal Sheard has three tackles for the year 's defeat, which is tied for the fifth largest number of championships. He also has 1.5 sacks and three consecutive games with a break-off, which is one less than a personal best of a season.
