After a short spring season with all athletes, "Dancing With the Stars" returned Monday for its 27th edition – and things were officially back to normal. There were a lot of impressive movements; some seriously unhappy dances; a little sniping between the judges; and, of course, tons of glittering costumes.
Here is our ranking of 13 pairs of the first night, from best to worst.
[‘Dancing With the Stars’ announces its cast for Season 27]
1) DeMarcus Ware and Lindsay Arnold (cha cha, judges' results: 8, 7, 8 for a total of 23 points out of 30)
Age: 36
Better known as: The NFL player who spent nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys then joined the Denver Broncos, who won the Super Bowl a few years later.
Scenario: He retired from football, so he's looking for a new competition he can dominate.
Performance: The athletes are still doing well on this show, and it seems we have a favorite. Len says DeMarcus has a fantastic presence, a great personality – and, hallelujah, he can dance! Bruno agrees that DeMarcus is so strong and so light in his footsteps. Carrie Ann recognizes that her athleticism and charisma will take her far.
2) Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke (Salsa, judges' results: 7, 7, 8 for a total of 22 points out of 30)
Age: 39
Better known as: The exiled husband of Kimmy Gibbler on the Netflix spin-off, "Fuller House".
Scenario: Her co-stars, Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin, have already participated in the show. Can he live up to their heritage?
Performance: Carrie Ann says that the chemistry of Juan Pablo and Cheryl is already off the charts. Although Juan Pablo had technical problems, Len, hard to impress, said that it was still a "first class" dance. Bruno is a big fan: "I mean, come on, it's a salsa that's hiding under your skin!"
3) Tinashe and Brandon Armstrong (Jive, Judges Results: 8, 7, 8 for a total of 23 points out of 30)
Age: 25
Better known as: A R & B singer whose first album caused a sensation in 2014.
Scenario: This is Brandon's first year as a pro. Can he help Tinashe to win?
Performance: The audience really liked this dance. Len thinks he has a lot of "snap, crackle and pop," especially for the first week, and says it's a top-notch performance. Bruno likes the routine to be both fun and impressive. Carrie Ann thinks Tinashe is a star and encourages her to show even more personality.
4) Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten (Jive, judges' results: 7, 7, 7 for a total of 21 points out of 30)
Age: 21
Better known as: An Instagram influencer (nearly 13 million followers) has transformed the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model.
Scenario: She competes in memory of her mother, who loved the series and died a few years ago from cancer.
Performance: Judges love it. Carrie Ann thinks it was well rehearsed and well choreographed, while Bruno calls Alexis "a stunning one". Len is particularly enthusiastic and thinks he did a great job with a jive.
5) Milo Manheim and Witney Carson (cha cha, judges scores: 7, 6, 7 for a total of 20 points out of 30)
Age: 17
Better known as: The star of Disney Channel's original movie "Zombies" and son of Camryn Manheim, star of "The Practice".
Scenario: As the youngest competitor, will he be able to follow?
Performance: Bruno thinks that Milo's timing is "great". He makes a complicated zombie comparison, which seems negative, even if, in the end, he declares that Milo played very well. Carrie Ann criticizes some of her movements and notes that her extremely tall height is ideal for dancing. Len gives the best compliment of all: "You are a dancer, well done."
6) Danelle Umstead and Artem Chigvintsev (Foxtrot, judges' results: 6, 6, 6 for a total of 18 points out of 30)
Age: 46
Better known as: The Paralympic alpine skier, who has won three bronze medals at the Paralympic Winter Games with her husband, Rob.
Scenario: She is the first blind competitor on the show, and she and Artem are understandable.
Performance: "It was so beautiful," says Bruno, before offering a critique of how she should move her arms. Len says that he can say that Danelle is nervous, although he thinks he has a lot of potential. Carrie Ann calls the link between Danelle and Artem "magical" and thinks that once Danelle relaxed, she will go in a "beautiful" direction.
7) Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe (foxtrot, judges' results: 7, 5, 6 for a total of 18 out of 30 points)
Age: 27
Better known as: Luna Lovegood from the "Harry Potter" franchise.
Scenario: She originally wanted to be a dancer, but she was rejected by the dance school. Will it be his redemption?
Performance: "Let's clear things up – you can dance," announces Carrie Ann. Evanna still has some work to do, especially with her shoulder movements. Len is more critical because he does not think the dance suits him very well. Bruno praises his dancing abilities, but is especially interested in creating references to "Harry Potter."
8) Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess (Jive, judges' results: 7, 6, 7 for a total of 20 points out of 30)
Age: 38
Better known as: The personality of the country radio that pulls the occasional controversial cascade, and a mentor on "American Idol" last season.
Scenario: He has no dance experience at all. Will he be able to handle the rigorous routines?
Performance: Bobby loses his mind with enthusiasm in the end, jumping everywhere and falling on the dance floor. Judges do not know what to do with it; Bruno summarizes the performance as "deliciously crazy". Carrie Ann responds with "Rough around the edge, but something was amazing". Len admires Bobby's energy, but thinks he's been carried away too much.
9) Mary Lou Retton and Sasha Farber (cha cha, judges scores: 6, 7, 6 for a total of 19 points out of 30)
Age: 50
Better known as: The gold-medalist gymnast who dominated the 1984 Olympics and became the first female athlete to appear in a Wheaties box.
Scenario: She has been shelved for years. Can she regain her competitive advantage?
Performance: Len states that Mary Lou is "very neat for 50 years," but advises her to work on her steps and to calm down a bit as she rushes into her dance. Bruno likes it a lot, but points out some small mistakes. Regardless of mistakes, Carrie Ann loves her and says she is "always in gold".
10) Nancy McKeon and Val Chmerkovskiy (fast, judges' results: 6, 6, 6 for a total of 18 out of 30 points)
Age: 52
Better known as: Jo from "The Facts of Life", a classic sitcom of the 1980s.
Scenario: She panicked about all this, but wants to show her children that you should face your fears.
Performance: Bruno makes fun of Nancy's many facial expressions during the dance, but he loves his energy. Carrie Ann thinks Bruno has been unnecessarily harsh because Nancy's face has told the story. Len declares it "a solid performance", which we can hope for better.
11) John Schneider and Emma Slater (foxtrot, judges' results: 7, 5, 6 for a total of 18 points out of 18)
Age: 58
Better known as: "The Dukes of Hazzard", singer of stars and country.
Scenario: He admits he is not a great dancer. Will he overcome his lack of capacity?
Performance: Carrie Ann looks astonished to say that John knows the dancefloor and has a rather natural elegance. Len disagrees, saying that if the performance was a decent effort, it "lacked finesse". Bruno walks for a while, and it seems like he thought everything was fine.
12) Nikki Glaser and Gleb Savchenko (salsa, judges scores: 6, 5, 6 for a total of 17 points out of 30)
Age: 34
Better known as: A comedian and expert in roasting, who directed a zinger at Tom Bergeron during the presentation of the cast.
Scenario: She is terrified of dancing in public, but wants to prove that she can take up the challenge.
Performance: Len is not happy, he calls the performance "cool and overly cautious". Bruno offers lukewarm: "It was not a total sinking." Carrie Ann avoids giving too much technical instruction, a bad sign, but says that Nikki has a good "body and mind" for dancing.
13) Jean Amabile and Jenna Johnson (fast, judges' results: 5, 4, 5 for a total of 14 points out of 30)
Age: 31
Better known as: The fan favorite (known as "Grocery Store Joe") who was cut the first night on "The Bachelorette" last season, but made a comeback on "Bachelor in Paradise".
Scenario: On his third celebrity TV reality attempt, can he avoid the embarrassment of being eliminated so soon?
Performance: Yes Carrie Ann struggles with hilarity to say something nice and says, "You can really grow a basket." . Bruno also avoids being too mean, and notes that Joe is extremely handsome, so he is not a good dancer. You can not have everything!
