ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The start of the Yankees road trip at the end of September which will lead to a playoff performance was a success.
The Yanks won Monday night in their room of horrors by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-1, at Tropicana Field in the first match of four matches.
The Yanks' second win in seven games this season at the Trop brought them closer to the advantage of having an edge on the field for the Wild Card Game of the American League.
The Yanks maintained their 1 ½ match for the first Wild Card against Oakland Athletics, who won 7-3 in Seattle.
There was plenty to do during the No. 96 victory for the Yankees.
There was center Aaron Hicks, who was going down the fourth inning with a tight left hamstring.
There was a substitute, Brett Gardner, who crashed in the left center wall with a nice sixth-inning grip that prevented an extra two-point shot that hit home.
Receiver Gary Sanchez added to his lead in the major league with his 16th and 17th balls.
There was the Yankees imitating Tampa Bay by throwing relief as their first match, then using seven extra arms arms, not only to keep the Rays at one pass, but also to limit them to just two shots .

Aaron Hicks hit a third-base baseball on Monday night and gave way to first base to break a double play.
Manager Aaron Boone saw this, and his antennae mounted when he noticed Hicks stretching his left hamstring in the center field before the bottom of the sleeve.
Once the camp was withdrawn, Boone investigated the canoe. Hicks admitted to being squeezed for a few days.
That's all Boone put in to shoot Hicks, who wanted to finish the game.
"We did not want to risk anything," said Boone after the match. "Let's hope it does not matter."
Hicks will be examined and undergo a precautionary MRI on Tuesday.
"I'm not too worried about that," said Hicks. "I think in about a day or two I should be ready to leave."
It was the Yankees' second injury in three days, as short-cut Didi Gregorius tore up the cartilage last Saturday while slipping into the lead as he scored an 11th-round run against the Orioles.
Gregorius was feeling a lot better on Monday, but he is unlikely to return before the final of Sunday's regular season or the Wild Card series next Wednesday.
"That's when things like that happen," Boone said. "You have to face it. You must be able to ride with. "
Hicks does not know how his injury occurred.
"He just came out of nowhere," he said. "I've been doing maintenance for about three days now and (Monday) the day they removed me from play.
"I just want to be on the field with my team and I have a nagging injury like this."
