The whale was seen feeding around barges near Gravesend

A beluga was "almost certainly" seen in the Thames in Kent, said lifeguards of marine life.

Dave Andrews, ecologist and ornithologist, discovered that he was feeding around the barges near Gravesend.

British divers, Marine Life Rescue, said that it seemed to "swim heavily".

Spokesperson Julia Cable urged the public not to get too close to the whale and "watch it from the shore".

The last sighting of a beluga in the UK goes back three years off Northumberland, and the sightings were "extremely rare," she said.

She added that she hoped to swim to the sea and not travel on the Thames.

In 2006, a 5 m (18 feet) flat nose whale died after falling into the river.
