The editor-in-chief of the Guardian's global affairs, Julian Borger, writes the United Nations on Donald Trump's latest tweet.
In the morning message, Trump made a personal connection with Hassan Rouhani, saying that he was certain that the Iranian president was an "absolutely charming man."
Just minutes before 7 am on the first day of the United Nations General Assembly summit, Trump said he was invited to meet Rouhani, but politely refused.
"Despite requests, I do not plan to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Maybe someday in the future. I'm sure it's an absolutely adorable man! Trump wrote, contrary to the ever-hostile rhetoric directed against the Iranian rulers by the president and his administration.
The Iranian mission to the UN quickly issued a statement in which it insists that "Iran has not requested a meeting".
