Tuesday brought rain on Long Island, with potential to become moderate to heavy at times, according to forecasters.
According to the Upton National Weather Service, the threat of heavy local rains is expected to persist in the early afternoon. Showers should decrease Tuesday night with a total of a few inches of rain or more for the day.
Late in the morning, no heavy rain events were reported, said Carlie Buccola, meteorological meteorologist at Upton.
At about 11:00, the Long Island MacArthur Airport had a temperature of 66 degrees, with cloudy skies and fog in the photo. The east winds were at 28 mph.
Shirley and Westhampton reported similar temperatures, light rains, even with fog, and southeast gusts of 20 and 21 mph.
The conditions have been dry recently, said the meteorological service. "Despite the threat of heavy rains, widespread flooding is not expected, with minor floods in urban areas and areas of low drainage being the main concern".
Due to the weather, flights arriving at LaGuardia Airport in Queens have experienced delays of about half an hour, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Do it on average one hour at Kennedy Airport, with some departures as well.
A coastal flood warning for southern Nassau County has expired, with southern Suffolk still at risk of minor coastal flooding isolated from vulnerable areas in the early afternoon.
With gusts of wind sometimes reaching 30 mph, there is a high tear risk up to Tuesday night for the ocean beaches. The weather service also issued a notice on small craft for the Long Island Strait until 2 pm. Tuesday and for the South Shore until Thursday morning.
Tuesday's highs should be in the 1970s, with troughs in the top 60, forecasters say.
Warmer, wetter conditions are expected Wednesday, with more showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, forecasters said. Wednesday's time should reach the top 70 with a low point near 60.
The forecast predicts a partly sunny Thursday with a maximum near 70.
The weekend brings relief, though. With the sun and highs in the low 70s on Saturday and Sunday, it will be "a perfect time for outdoor events," said Rich Hoffman, a meteorologist for News 12 Long Island.
