Los Angeles star Angels Shohei Ohtani has decided to get surgery by Tommy John and will have the procedure the first week of the off season, the team announced Tuesday.
The renowned surgeon Neal ElAttrache will perform the procedure in Los Angeles.
The Angels announced on September 5 that an MRI had shown that Ohtani had suffered further damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and that Tommy John's operation was the recommended course of action. However, Ohtani had not yet engaged in the proceedings.
Ohtani, who launches right-handed and left-handed bats, said that when the surgical recommendation was revealed, he planned to finish this season as the team's designated hitter. The 24-year-old rookie also said he would be able to return next season as DH, although he may not be able to start again before 2020.
"Swaying does not affect my elbow," said Ohtani, who had a series of home runs shortly after the diagnosis. "I feel like I'm progressing as a hitter right now, I'm getting as many experiences as I can while the games count."
Ohtani hits .280 with 21 homers and 56 RBIs in 307 bats. As pitcher, he went 4-2 with a score of 3.31 and 63 outs from 10 starts.
After receiving an injection of platelet-rich plasma and an injection of stem cells, Mr. Ohtani was diagnosed with collateral ligament injury of the ulna in early July. He returned to the mound in September. 2 against the Houston Astros.
Ohtani lasted only 2⅓ innings against the Astros, and he suffered a drastic fall in speed during the match. A few days later he had been scheduled to start a slight climax session, but he never did so after reporting that his elbow was painful. The medical staff then decided that he should receive the new MRI, which would lead to the surgical recommendation.
Ohtani was in the lineup Tuesday night against the Rangers. The team ends the game on Sunday.
