Major Verizon outage affects Southwestern wireless customers

Verizon customers have suffered from a sudden lack of connectivity in much of the South and Midwest, with the country's largest wireless service provider experiencing widespread blackout. Verizon acknowledged the problem in a tweet posted earlier this afternoon, saying the blackout had affected "some southern markets."

However, reports on Twitter show that many users in the Midwest and New York State also seem to be affected. An overview of the Down Detector website shows broad bands of red in these areas as early as the middle of Tuesday afternoon.

It is unclear if the problem is widespread, if the outages are related or if customers can expect the service to resume. I went to Verizon for more information and would update if I heard.

To Verizon's credit – or at least to the credit of his social media team – his Twitter account customer service seems to have spent the last hour responding frantically to angry users, assuring them that the company's engineers are working hard to restore service. If you're waiting for important text, you may be cold, but at least it's something.
