Well, it degenerated quickly.
Tuesday night, Dustin Poirier tweeted that he wanted the UFC to stop fighting for a main event of the UFC 230. Why? Because there is already an appropriate option for the November card.
It just needs a little upgrade.
Poirier (24-5 MMA, 16-4 UFC) will face Nate Diaz (19-11 MMA, 14-9 UFC) in a lightweight bout à la carte on Nov. 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight was originally advertised as a co-headliner, but "The Diamond" believes that this could be perfectly suited to billing.
At first, Poirier was content to push for the title and go from three to five. He took his proposal a step further, and said it was the perfect opportunity for the UFC to create a 165-pound weight class where he and Diaz could fight for the inaugural belt (via Twitter):
I hear that the UFC is looking for a main event when it already has one. It's me vs Nate. Title of 165 books. A major event for people. Stop looking, Dana. We had that. Let's go.
A few hours later, Diaz was "happy to announce" that the fight had been promoted to a 165-pound fight (via Twitter):
I am pleased to announce that I am bringing a new weight provision to the UFC
I will be fighting for the main event on Nov. 3 in New York against Dustin Poirier for the very first deviation of the 165-pound belt.
I'm happy to be apart from the story @ufc @danawhite
In a few minutes, Poirier intervened to apparently make the same announcement (via Twitter):
UFC President Dana White has denied any plans to fight for a 165 pound title at UFC 230, according to Brett Okamoto from ESPN.com.
The UFC, of course, does not have a division of 165 pounds. It has been several years since we talk about this sport. The lightweight and welterweight divisions are the most inflated on the UFC list, with more than 100 fighters signed up in each division.
Numerous names such as Rafael dos Anjos, Kevin Lee, Michael Chiesa, Diego Sanchez, and even the current 170-pound champion, Tyron Woodley, said they were fine if the UFC added the weight category, but White Idea .
