Typhoon Trami is about to land in Japan this weekend, and the photos taken by astronaut Alex Gerst in space show the inhabitants of the Earth a rare glimpse of the tropical cyclone.

Gerst is an astronaut and geophysicist at the German European Space Agency. He is one of six people aboard ISS Exp 57, as commander. Over the past week, the 42-year-old shared photos of Trami on his social account and on his Flickr account with the caption: "As if someone had shot the gigantic cork of the planet."

According to AccuWeather, Trami is the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of about 195 kilometers to the hour on Wednesday. He will be heading to the Ryukyu Islands, near Miyako and Okinawa, from Friday night to Saturday. CNN reports that total precipitation from Kagoshima to Tokyo could reach 19.6 inches.
