Amazon leaves its customer reviews in its new store.
Called Amazon 4-Star, the new concept will store items on average that customers have rated four stars or more, according to a blog article announcing the store. This means that it will only include the best of the best; Amazon indicates that the current assortment is on average 4.4 stars.
It opens Thursday in the SoHo district of Manhattan.
The assortment of products will vary greatly, from Amazon appliances and other consumer electronics products to kitchen and home products, toys and games to books, the primary goal of Amazon. It will also include popular items locally.
Amazon says it will use data from sales lists and customer lists to display the most popular trends or items.
Although it opens just in time for the holiday season, the store is not a holiday pop-up.
The most recent store takes a page from the company's Amazon Books stores, which charge customers the suggested retail price, unless they are members first. In this case, they receive the Amazon.com prize, which is often at least slightly lower.
On Amazon 4-Star, digital price tags will display both the total price and the Amazon.com price, which can often change depending on Amazon's pricing algorithm.
Amazon 4-Star is only the latest foray into physical retail by Amazon, which has expanded its Amazon Books stores and opened seasonal pop-ups in malls and other locations. It is also said that it greatly expands its automated Amazon Go stores.
