A fishing boat captain told members of the US Coast Guard that a crew member had become "crazy" when he allegedly stabbed several people on board, revealing a cry for help.
The call, issued by the Coast Guard, begins when the Virginia-based fishing vessel "Captain Billy Haver" was about 60 miles off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The captain asks if anyone can hear him repeatedly before Coast Guard members answer "loud and clear," asking him if he "agrees".
After about two minutes of trying to establish communication, the captain responds: "We have a man gone mad here on the boat."
The captain then gives his position to the coast guard before telling them he does not know if one of the victims is doing well.
"We have a man … I do not know if he's dead or not," the captain said. "But one of the crew members went crazy and he started beating people to the head with a hammer."
The captain then says that the man is on the platform and has already "cut off the antenna or something like that," expressing concern for those on board.
"I've had three men in danger right now," he said. "One, I can not wake him up."
The US Attorney's Office in Massachusetts has announced charges against the undocumented immigrant Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, 27, during the attack.
Vazquez, who was illegally in the country from Mexico, reportedly quarreled on the ship before stabbing three of his teammates, according to the indictment filed Monday. Vazquez is accused at the federal level since the crime took place in the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
A crew member told the authorities that a fellow ship was already lying on deck and that he was bleeding badly when Vazquez lightened him. allegedly attacked, according to the US Attorney's Office.
Vazquez, allegedly armed with a hammer in one hand and a knife in the other, told the victim to "stay right there" before attacking him and a third person, according to court.
The first two victims were treated by a doctor on board a German liner, who responded to the fishing vessel's distress call. The doctor said that one of these victims was dead, authorities said.
A total of seven people were on board, the authorities said. Vazquez climbed onto the mast of the ship but was captured by other crew members, according to the US Attorney's Office.
Vasquez had already been arrested in March and charged with forced kidnapping, intimidation or deception and released on bail, according to federal authorities.
Vasquez could face the prison where he is convicted of murder. He will also be deported after serving a potential sentence.
