The San Francisco 49ers made official Wednesday what everyone knew was inevitable, placing injured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on the injured list late in the season.
In the same vein, second-year quarterback Nick Mullens was recalled by the team.
Garoppolo, 26, suffered a tear from the ACL on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. The injury came after he tried to fight for extra yards in the hope of bringing San Francisco closer. Garoppolo's knee flexed into the grass inside Arrowhead and he immediately grabbed his left knee.
With Garoppolo's official defeat for the season, second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard will be starting the team from now on. Now with mixed expectations for the rest of the season, head coach Kyle Shanahan has tried to give a positive result.
"The justice of the peace is very impressive," said the head coach on Wednesday. "Last year, he was very smart, he always knew the game plan inside and out, he worked very hard, he thought and he was also a reactor."
Shanahan also made sure to note that the 49ers are not looking at the commercial market to add another quarter to the roster of 53 players. In the last 24 hours, the team has recruited seven street-level agents, including EJ Manuel, Tom Savage and Landry Jones. The plan is to sign probably one of these guys before the San Francisco match against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Having worked with Shanahan in Houston, it seems that Savage has the advantage.
We have already focused on options for the 49ers now that Garoppolo is injured. At that time, the idea of integrating a free street agent was the most logical. San Francisco should not be fighting for a playoff spot with his starting quarterbacked. It is in this sense that it makes no sense to give up a future capital project for a replacement option under the center.
Beathard gives the 49ers a wealth of options to go from the front. If he played well in the last 13 games, they will have a small commercial chip in their hands during the off season. If Beathard struggles or fails to progress after a rookie season from top to bottom, San Francisco would likely be picking up in the first round of the April session.
A third-round pick from Iowa last year, Beathard completed 54.9 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and six interceptions. His best performance came in the win of the week 10 on the Giants of New York. The 49ers only won against Beathard. He completed 19 of 25 passes for 288 yards with two touchdowns and one interception en route to a San Francisco 31-21 win. Beathard will finally start the next game against Seattle before qualifying for Jimmy Garoppolo, recently acquired.
This is certainly a less than ideal situation for a 49ers team that has entered the season with aspirations to the playoffs. But the mantra around Santa Clara was the next man.
By promoting Mullens on the training team, San Francisco is clear that he will be # 2 behind Beathard and play in Sunday's game against Los Angeles. A free agent not dismembered from the state of Mississippi last year, this is the first time that Mullens is on an active list. However, he outclassed Beathard during the pre-season. There is a benefit when it comes to the 6 foot 1 signal caller.
Apart from downgrading from the point of view of talent at quarterback, the biggest problem ahead will be pass protection. Beathard was sacked 19 times in five games last season and had 20% of his spin-offs to the north. This eventually resulted in injuries to the rookie of the time. In the first three games of the 2018 season, Garoppolo has been sacked 13 times, a number that far exceeds that of the eight sacks that he has taken in five starts with the 49ers last year.
If the protection passes in front of Beathard, it will probably lead to Plan C at the shift post. That includes Mullens who sees his first regular season action as an NFLer. It would also make it necessary to impose another weapon on a veteran.
For the moment, Beathard gets his second chance to prove himself in the brass of the 49ers in as many seasons. As for Garoppolo, he will undergo surgery after his knee swelling has subsided. This should happen in the next two weeks.
The positive aspect is that Garoppolo suffered an ACL tear without any other structural problem. This is something to point out in concluding that he will be ready for the training camp next summer.
