A kayaker got more than he had negotiated during a trip to the island of Kaikoura, New Zealand, when a seal hit in the face with an octopus.

The video shows the seal coming out of the water, the octopus in the mouth, tilting the mollusk towards the unsuspecting kayaker.

The seal then disappears into the water before diving between the other kayakers.

23-year-old Taiyo Masuda grabbed the seal on a video and said the group did not realize what the seals were doing.

"Around lunchtime, several seals started swimming, we thought they were regenerating their bodies, but apparently they were looking for food," Masuda told Reuters.

"A seal is swimming right next to us, having an octopus in the mouth, jumping to the surface next to us, then trying to chew the leg but ended up slapping us !!"
