Not everything is "fantastic" in Potter's world after the all-new trailer of "Fantastic Beasts: The Grindelwald Crimes " abandoned this week.
The cast of South Korean actress Claudia Kim, Nagini, who turns into a snake in the latest trailer of the film released in November, has no success. Nagini finally becomes the threatening serpent of Lord Voldemort.
Some on Twitter were quick to point out that what they thought was inappropriate about the decision.
"How did anyone involved in Fantastic Beasts 2 look at Nagini's situation and think," It seems problematic … " a shared Twitter user in an NSFW tweet.
"maybe" circus performer who turns into a deadly snake "is not the best choice of role for one of two (women of color) in the franchise," wrote another.
"The new Fantastic Beasts trailer was visually amazing but I do not know what to feel about all this Nagini", a ripped member of the Twittersphere sharing.
Another user slammed "the revelation that Nagini is actually a human woman (with an Asian actress in the role) cursed to become a snake" as a "racist and misogynistic disaster".
J.K. Rowling, who is a producer and writer for the film, defended Kim's casting with a user who tweeted "Suddenly turning Nagini into Korean is a garbage can."
"The Naga are mythical snake-like creatures of Indonesian mythology, hence the name of Nagini," the author shared. "They are sometimes represented as adults, sometimes half-human, half-snakes." Indonesia includes a few hundred ethnic groups, including Javanese, Chinese and Betawi. "
After telling the user to "have a nice day," Rowling included a snake emoji.
Kim herself shared her enthusiasm about her role in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini," she told the news. "You only saw it as a Horcrux. In this, she is a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to remain a human being and I think it contrasts beautifully with the character.
"Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald" arrives in theaters on November 16th.
