A well-known Californian surfer – who has already survived a shark attack – was found dead in Mexico, according to local reports.

Adam Francis D'Esposito – known as Biff – descended on September 5 in Baja, a Tijuana neighborhood popular with surfers, in his father's silver Volvo in 2001, claiming he would return the next day, according to his family.

The 39-year-old man was last seen on September 8 by the owner of a surf shop, who described him as "in bad shape" and "scared," said D'Esposito's sister , Briana, at CBS8.

A passing driver captured a barefoot and barefooted Biff video along a road shortly thereafter, said his sister.

His disappearance triggered a frantic search.

Professional surfer Kelly Slater joined the research efforts on Sunday to find D'Esposito, posting a picture on Instagram with the caption "Missing Person" and the number of a board hotline.

"It really hits home when someone you know goes missing," he writes, pleading for information. "A familiar face in our surfing world has been gone for almost two weeks … You may have seen 'Biff' surfing in Tahiti or San Diego over the years. He has been a familiar face in many series. "

Members of D'Esposito's family went to Baja Malibu to help with the search and announced Wednesday that Biff had been found dead.

"The details of my brother's death are still being worked out," writes Briana. "Our hearts are heavy when we accept the fact that he is no longer with us. He was a very charismatic person with a big heart, a passionate personality and a deep love for surfing.

The grieving sister told Fox San Diego that the Mexican authorities had recovered the body on 9 September and brought it to a Rosarito morgue, determining that he had drowned.

But the family is questioning the official cause of death since D'Esposito was a strong swimmer, they said.

D'Esposito was no stranger to strong waves and was nominated for the Wipeout of the Year Award in 2013 at the Surfer Poll Awards, according to SURFER magazine.

While surfing the waves in Tahiti in 2012, D'Esposito was attacked by a shark, who nibbled a piece of his board, but he was able to escape unscathed by nudging the animal in the nose.

"I thank God like 10 times an hour that I still have a hand," he said in a TransWorld SURF video about the heartbreaking incident.

He leaves a girl of 6 years old.
