Tourists are advised not to get too close to wild animals

A German tourist was trampled to death by an elephant while she was attempting to photograph the animal in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwean authorities said the attack took place Wednesday in Mana Pools National Park and that the tourist had succumbed to his injuries later in the day.

The woman was part of a group of tourists who met a herd of elephants when entering the park.

Elephant attacks are common in Zimbabwe, where they often conflict with local farmers.

The woman was not named.

According to the spokesman of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, Tinashe Farawo, the authorities have not yet established what had angered the animals and led to the attack.

"We always ask people to stay away from wild animals, they have to keep a safe distance," he told The Associated Press.

Last year, a trained elephant stomped a tour guide in Victoria Falls, a tourist resort in the west of the country.

Another man from the area was also killed in a separate incident last year after trying to drive elephants outdoors to take pictures, reports the AFP news agency.

According to the 2016 Great elephant census, Zimbabwe has the second largest elephant population in the world with 82,304 inhabitants.
