Security assistance can come from someone who is not safe.
Veteran Safety Corey Graham, who will play in the Eagles starting lineup in place of injured Rodney McLeod, has identified second-year cornerback Rasul Douglas as a candidate for the third security point or sixth half-back.
Douglas, a third-round pick last year, has only played six times in defense this year, although he made a crucial interception in the red zone on the first day against the Falcons.
But he definitely has a hybrid skill set. He is tough, physical, a safe tackle, 6 feet 2 inches. With the depth that the Eagles have in the corner, at some point he will probably be safe.
It remains to be seen if this will happen Sunday in Nashville. But the Eagles' options are limited in terms of their third safety or safety in Big Dime, three corners and three safeties.
The Eagles acquired Deiondre 'Hall's security earlier this month, but he was suspended the first week of the regular season and did not play defense in the last two games.
Tre Sullivan played the first game of the season, was released the next day and then signed the team again the following week. He is likely to get a promotion on the 53 when McLeod will officially go in IR.
McLeod, a strong starter here since 2016, is missing for the year after breaking his MCL in the win against the Colts on Sunday.
Graham joined the Eagles on August 5th after serving third year last year. He is in his 12th season in the NFL and at age 33, he is the fourth-highest scout in the NFL. He played 174 games, placing second behind Jason Peters (179).
"Everyone is ready to ride," said Graham. "The closest guy, no matter who he is. Everyone knows their job and knows what they are supposed to do. So it's not really a big drop because of that. When you have guys who are ready to play, you're fine.
"We are confident in all our guys. So, no matter who he is – me, Rasul, Deiondre "- it makes no difference. Everyone knows what they are doing.
Eagles defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz, loves half-backs with safety skills and security measures with cornerback techniques, and that's why. He wants interchangeable parts that can cover and attack, and that's really the third security.
According to the Eagles sub-pack, Graham said rookie Avonte Maddox could also be part of the group.
"These are smart guys, to be honest with you," Graham said. "They are intelligent. They pick it up. As we do in our defense room, we learn anyway any position from the beginning, so one of the two can enter and play.
"You never know, it could be Hall, could be anybody, Tre could be moved, I do not know, but when we discover that we will adapt and we will be ready to play."
As for Graham, he averaged 26 losses per game last year in the regular season, a figure that went up to 41 in the playoffs.
Ultimately, every defensive player who plays Sunday for the Eagles vs. Titans game will likely have a role to play in certain projects.
"It will not be a guy," Graham said after Thursday's training. "It will not be a guy who does it. I do not know exactly how we will report if Rod is not here, but we will understand him.
"I'm pretty sure my job is not going to change dramatically. In some packages, I will always do the same thing. It's just that someone else will have to come and help.
