SINGAPORE – The next time you take the downtown line, you can board the pink train.

The special train, which runs from Friday, 28 September to the end of October, provides information on risk factors for breast cancer, to encourage women to get tested quickly.

Launched in 2016, the pink train is an initiative to raise awareness of the issue of breast cancer in Singapore in October, the month of breast cancer awareness.

On Friday, the pink train, with the message "Every Woman Matters", was launched at the Bukit Panjang MRT station.

"The pink train reminds us that we all have a role to play in the fight against breast cancer, which affects not only women but also those around us," said Minister of State for Culture, Youth and Communications and information at launch.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF), the Land Transport Authority and Moove Media, the advertising arm of ComfortDelGro.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women here.

According to the 2015 annual report of the Singapore Cancer Registry, it had nearly one in three cancer cases among women between 2011 and 2015.

The disease is more common in women 40 years and older and the risk increases with age.

However, according to the 2015 Health Behavior Surveillance of Singapore Health Promotion Board, less than 40% of women aged 50 to 69 years have had mammograms to screen for breast cancer.

In addition to the pink train, there are murals featuring breast cancer facts, screening options, and financial assistance for Dhoby Ghaut and Serangoon MRT stations as well as bus interchanges in Bedok and Boon Lay.

The messages are accompanied by a BCF hotline to encourage people affected by the disease to seek support from the organization.

The campaign is expected to reach around 34 million commuters.

BCF President Noor Quek said information on the train highlights what the public should do as part of a healthy lifestyle.
