A hiker disappeared in Great Smoky Mountains National Park Tuesday night, triggering a massive search operation in the park, authorities said.
Mitzie Sue "Susan" Clements, 53, was hiking with her daughter near Andrews Bald Mountain when the two men broke up, said Thursday the National Park Service in a statement.
"Last night, experienced researchers spent the night on the Appalachian Trail, trying to locate Clements and interviewing hikers in the area," the statement said. "The research continues this morning with about 40 trained members of the park's search and rescue team."
Researchers need to stay outside until late in the evening and according to the weather, at night, Julena Campbell of the National Park Service told ABC News Thursday afternoon.

Clements, originally from Ohio, is described as a white female 5 feet 6 inches, with brown hair and blue eyes. She weighs 125 pounds and was wearing a green zip sweater, black workout pants on a black leggings, a transparent rain poncho and white sneakers during her last visit.
