The semitrailer tractor plunged into driving rain, crossed the highway, turned around and landed on a car in what appeared to be a certain disaster.
Surprisingly, the occupants of the car – one of whom was stuck for three hours – survived the accident. Unidentified motorists were taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, where police said they were admitted with "moderate" injuries.
The events unfolded shortly after Friday morning in the midst of a storm that spilled over an inch of rain into the area.
Belfast State Police stated that the west-towed semitrailer had sped across the median and had entered the eastbound lane, hitting the trailer of another aircraft and returning to the car in the left lane.
The second truck pulled out of the road and its trailer went over the guardrail and along the embankment, the police said. The trailer remained connected to the cabin, which prevented it from descending further down the slope.
The accident occurred near kilometer mark 68.5 and spread debris on the west and east lanes. At 1630, both lanes appeared to be open, according to surveillance cameras at Exit 67, Hellertown exit.
The closure went through most of the day. For hours, Highway 22 was the only east-west highway available in the Lehigh Valley.
At 3:00 am, fire officials announced by radio that they were making progress in releasing the occupants of the car bombs. A person was extracted a few minutes later.
The second person, a man, has been described as "heavily trapped". The medical staff worked closely with the emergency workers as they prepared to release him.
The trailer was removed from the car at 0453 and the second person was removed at 0515 after being trapped for three hours and ten minutes.
Meanwhile, the hazardous workers on the scene were trying to control and clean up a fuel spill of at least 50 gallons.
Lower Saucon Police, State Police, Lower Saucon Fire Rescue Service and Dewey Fire Company Rescue Service assisted.
