The words "Donald Trump" are not pronounced once in the first of Friday's season of Last man standing, but the 45th President is looming on almost every stage of Tim Allen's reincarnated (and relocated) family comedy. More unexpected, however, is the tone Last man strikes all the way back from 22 minutes. We could almost call it … unifying.
Other than going from ABC to Fox, the new Last man is about the same as the old Last man. Allen embodies Mike Baxter, a strong and proud man, and a sporting goods store whose worldview sometimes puts him at odds with his family: the wife Vanessa (Nancy Travis) and his daughters Kristin ( Amanda Fuller), Eve (Kaitlyn Dever) and Mandy (Molly McCook, taking the role of Molly Ephraim). Nowadays, Mike feels good about "new and improved America," but his family – like the nation – is divided: Eve and Mandy do not speak after a debate about patriotism, while the Liberal's son-in-law Mike (Jordan Masterson) has engaged in such a frenzy of political desperation that he plans to transfer Kristin and their son Boyd (Jet Jurgensmeyer) to Canada.
It would have been easy for Allen – a frank Republican who once compared being a conservative in Hollywood to be in "Germany 30" – to play cheap seats with pictures of snowflakes. Instead, the first of Last man balance his dads left with a general message of Can not we all hear? "Listen, politics always changes. Sometimes it's my guy, sometimes it's your idiots, "he tells Ryan, while the laughter track responds with enthusiasm. Later, Mike's address to the camera for his vlog Outdoor Man: "Do not communicate seems to be the weapon of choice right now," he says. "To American and American families, keep talking."
Did Tim Allen just send a healing message to the TV world?
Those who found Last man standing Funny when Obama was president will probably find him still funny today. But even those who could not argue with Mike's command to his family: "We treat each other with dignity and respect, because that's who we are." Category B-
