MILWAUKEE – That may not be what they envisioned, but the Detroit Tigers will be playing baseball significantly in September in front of a large, crowded crowd in a playoff atmosphere.
Dawel Lugo managed a home run for the Tigers, but the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to win the opening game of Round 6 to 5 on Friday night at Miller Park.
The Brewers (93-67) have already won a spot in the first row, but they still have a game late on the Chicago Cubs for the title of the Central Division of the National League. The Tigers (64-96) are trying to play the spoiler.
For a few minutes it seemed like they could do it.
The Tigers found holes all over the home field in the first run against Brewers pitcher Zach Davies, scoring three out of five points.
It was the extent of their offense for a moment. The Brewers pitchers took out 20 of the following 21 batters, nine of which were behind.
Tigers star Jordan Zimmermann dropped the goals to Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun in the bottom of the first, electrifying the crowd of 44,770. Yelich was serenade with "M-V-P!" songs with each bat. He walked and scored the starting shot in the fourth. Orlando Arcia doubled and scored the fifth and last run of Zimmermann to fifth.
The Tigers fought back against southpaw Josh Hader, who hit Jeimer Candelario to take eighth. Hitter-rapper Dawel Lugo then crashed a 3-2 quick-left ball for the first lap of his career.
It was the first time the Tigers have drawn since Victor Martinez made it on September 22, 2016. The Tigers have hit seven times this season.
The 5-5 draw did not last long. Braun dominated the start of the eighth inning with a high ball that bounced on right-field player Nicholas Castellanos's glove and on the fence.
It was his 20th year homerun and the 32nd multi-homer match of his career.
WATCH OF INJURY
Tigers left field player Christin Stewart (low abdominal strain) did not start on Friday and may not play in the last two games of the season.
FOLLOWING
