Air Niugini revises report saying passenger lost after landing in Micronesia

A day after declaring that the 47 passengers and crew members had safely evacuated after the forced landing of one of its aircraft in Micronesia, officials of Air Niugini announced Saturday that A passenger was missing.

The airline said in a statement that she was working with local authorities, hospitals and investigators to try and find the missing passenger. Officials did not immediately identify the man.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft crashed into a lagoon close to the runway while it was landing early Friday at Chuuk Airport.

A passenger flying on board an Air Niugini plane that crashed on Friday morning in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is missing, Satruday officials said.

"It was supposed to land but instead of landing, it was 150 meters away and it fell," Jimmy Emilio, general manager of Chuuk Airport in Weno, Micronesia, told Reuters.

Seven passengers and crew members were taken to the hospital, but no one was seriously injured, officials said earlier.

The aircraft was en route to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, RNZ Pacific reported.

The cause of the accident remains uncertain.
