Some parts of the southwest are preparing for any sudden flash floods as Hurricane Rosa slowly heads northeast on the Pacific Ocean.
Although the Category 2 hurricane weakens off the coasts of Baja California, Mexico, it is still powerful enough to trigger a sudden flood alert on Monday and Tuesday in Phoenix, where his remains are heading, announced Friday the National Weather Service.
Rosa was scheduled to land on Monday on the north of Baja and continue to separate as he headed northeast, into the deserts of Nevada and Arizona, forecasters said.
"Abundant tropical moisture from Hurricane Rosa will be coming from the shores of western Mexico in southern Nevada and surrounding states, which could lead to heavy rains and flash floods from Monday to Tuesday evening. ", announced the Las Vegas National Weather Service in a statement. declaration.
Forecasters warned residents of Las Vegas to expect rainfall of up to three inches per hour from Monday to Wednesday.
Much of Arizona could receive a total of four inches of rain, high winds, and floods during the same period.
The cities of Flagstaff, Payson and Prescott, Arizona, and the south shore of the Grand Canyon, Arizona, announced weather officials. Up to six inches was possible north of the canyon.
Rosa was a category 4 hurricane Thursday but was downgraded to category 2 Friday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Rosa's leftovers could send rain to the Pacific coast in San Diego and Los Angeles early next week, the weather service said.
According to meteorologist Carol Smith's weather service, San Diego could receive up to three-quarters of an inch of rain and parts of Los Angeles a half-inch, which represents a healthy amount during the traditional season of autumn fires in southern California.
The chances of this happening are 40 to 60 percent, Smith said.
It would be the first real rain of the southern California season, which usually peaks in February, she said.
The possible rainfall could be accompanied by higher than normal moisture from tropical fronts, she said.
Meanwhile, Rosa launches high waves that should reach the beaches of southern California from Saturday to Monday. The surf forecast for Orange County includes the possibility of making sets of 10 feet by Saturday night, said the weather service.
"There will definitely be some surfing," Smith said.
