The State of Michigan and Central Michigan are putting the conference on hold for a showdown on Saturday in the state.

Spartans No. 21 (2-1) and Chippewas (1-3), both out of last week's win, face each other at Spartan Stadium. The kickoff is at noon.

Michigan State opened Big Ten Play last week with a 35-21 victory at Indiana, while central Michigan clinched its first win of the season – 17-5 against Maine – to bounce back from a defeat facing north to Illinois and open the field to the American conference.

Although Michigan State is a big favorite, central Michigan has three wins in this series, which has only 10 games, all in East Lansing (1991, 1992 and 2009).

The Spartans lead the defense of the highest ranked race of the country to the game (32.7 yards allowed per game), while the CMU ranks 111th in the country in attack by the race. That could prompt CMU quarterback Tommy Lazzaro on his first career start to move the ball into the air.
