October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the many reasons why it is so important to raise awareness of this disease is its prevalence: one in eight women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at some point in their lives. Our first storyteller knows how devastating a diagnosis of breast cancer can be. As Leslie Biernat told her in November 2009 at the StorySlam "Beginnings" she discovered a mottle in the shower and was subsequently diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer just with a mastectomy and hysterectomy, Leslie is became a survivor and was determined not to lose her second chance in life. She changed careers to focus on other breast cancer patients, participated in several Ironman races and even created her own foundation. His challenge to others? Follow your dreams today – because tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Sally Stern, our second storyteller, highlighted a harsh and humorous reality of breast cancer screening. Just a few days before the TMI StorySlam where she took the stage, she had been scheduled for a mammogram. As her time in the waiting room increased, so did the amount of sweat flowing from her glands. By the time Sally was put in the machine, she felt bad for the poor nurse, who was perfectly aware of the respect of the rule of not wearing a deodorant the day of a mammogram.
