When presenting a new song at the Global Citizen Festival, Legend explained how frustrating it was to read the news and the importance of acting.

John Legend turned political when presenting his new song "Preach" at the Global Citizen Festival in New York on Saturday.

"I recently wrote this song, it's not out yet. It's called" Preach. "In the song, we talk about the frustration of looking at your phone, read the news, see what happens, "he told the Central Park public." See how senators treat women who file complaints of sexual abuse. See how people ridicule young people who defend the right to go to school without being mistreated. See how people would denigrate those who simply claim that the lives of blacks matter. We can be frustrated when we see all this, but we can not give up. This is not enough for us to talk about it or tweeter, we have to do something about it. "

After receiving shouts and applause by mentioning senators, Legend later stated that the song was inspired by people "doing something" and that his message was that people can not just "preach" but must act .

The legend is expressed in its opposition to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, whose nomination process saw Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, appear before the Judiciary Committee. Senate this week. During the Kavanaugh and Ford hearings in the Senate, Legend tweeted that he believed Ford and that Kavanaugh looked likea complete asshole. "

The singer also starred in an advertisement against Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Earlier in his introduction to the song, Legend mentioned his Free America campaign, which aims to promote awareness of issues involving the criminal justice system and to change the conversation on the issue. He also encouraged members of the public to vote. "We have a lot of work to do, and we can not just talk, we have politicians here who talk, but we will follow up with them, no, we need a law passed. Let's follow up with you, Governor Cuomo, all our governors across the country, we pay attention and we vote, do we vote everyone? "he said.

Legend, Janet Jackson, The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes hosted the Global Citizen Festival 2018 and were hosted by Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness. The purpose of the concert was to encourage leaders to achieve the US Sustainable Development Goals and end extreme poverty by 2030.
