The Los Angeles Dodgers made a tighter call than expected, but they returned to the playoffs.
The Dodgers won their sixth consecutive MLB playoff game on Saturday with a 10-6 win over the San Francisco Giants. Alex Wood was credited with the victory after launching 1.1 scoreless relief. A ninth round of four points propelled Los Angeles to victory. Manny Machado scored 2 goals out of 5 and gave the Dodgers a 6-5 lead with a triple RBI in the eighth end.
One year before reaching the seventh game of the World Series, the Dodgers have spent most of 2018 fighting to make it through October. They entered in September in a match on the first row of the West of the NL and 2.5 games behind for the second slot for the wild cards.
the Colorado Rockies led the West as late as September 16th. But a three-game sweep of Bud Black's team in a late-season series reversed the trend for the Dodgers. Colorado has since recovered to first place and holds a lead of 0.5 match.
If the Dodgers had missed the playoffs, this season could have been a miscalculation. The team managed to win a ring in 2018, giving up the elite expectation of landing Machado from the Baltimore Orioles and adding David Freese to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Health has been a major problem throughout the season. Each starting pitcher is short of time due to injury. No Dodgers pitcher has thrown more than 161.1 innings.
The bats were also more shaky than expected. The Dodgers rank in the bottom half of the baseball average batting, although their numbers on the base are much better.
Despite occasional injuries and droughts, the Dodgers are still second in the ERA and sixth in scoring points. Their plus-176 points differential is by far the best of the National League.
So, while the road to get there was a bit uneven, the Dodgers should be considered favorites for another spot in the World Series once the post-season starts.
