CHICAGO –
Six people have been injured in a shootout in Chicago since Friday night, marking a significant drop in gun violence compared to last week.
The shootings last week injured 25 people and killed one person in the same amount of time – starting at 5 pm. Friday at 7 am Sunday – more than three times the total number of people compared to this week.
The last two incidents of this weekend took place at the same time on Sunday morning.
A woman driving her husband was shot and wounded at 4:50 am in the Humboldt Park neighborhood in the West End. The 34-year-old woman was driving in the 1200 block of North Central Park Avenue when a black SUV stopped and opened fire, according to Chicago police.
She was shot in the shoulder and grazed her neck, the police said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
At about the same time, a man was seriously injured when gunshots were fired at a party in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the south side.
The 20-year-old was at a rally in the 1200 block of 48th Street West when someone opened fire from a nearby alleyway, police said. The man was shot in the head and in the back and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
He did not appear to be the target of the shooting, a police source said.
Nobody was on guard Sunday morning as Central Investigators investigated the shooting.
