Texas surf park closes after the death of a "cerebral amoeba" man | Texas

Naegleria fowleri can cause a "rare and devastating" infection called primary amoeba meningoencephalitis, according to the CDC. The amoeba, which is usually found in fresh water such as rivers and lakes, enters the body through the nose and then travels to the brain.

In the United States, only four out of 143 people infected between 1962 and 2017 survived.

Infections can also come from contaminated tap water or poorly chlorinated pool water, the CDC says, but can not be caused by ingestion of water containing the amoeba.

In 2010, a 7 year old Arlington boy died after contracting the infection while swimming at Glen Rose.
