Victims of last year's Las Vegas shootout will be honored on Sunday as Corona officials gather at Eagle Glen Park to dedicate the athletics field to their memory.
Service is scheduled at 10 am on the ground at 4190 Bennett Ave.
"When the shooting stopped at the biggest shooting in the history of our country, the devastation was unimaginable," according to a statement from the city. "Among the people killed were several people who had taken up residence at Corona."
Thomas Day Jr., 54, a native of the city and co-leader of his family's construction business, along with Chris Roybal, 28, another native and veteran of the US Navy, were part of the 58 people shot by a 64 year old man. Stephen Paddock at Harvest Road Music Festival 91, on the night of October 1, 2017.
The Eagle Glen Athletic Field will be renamed the "Field of Remembrance" in honor of the victims. A plaque will be installed as part of the dedication.
"The ceremony will be an opportunity to reflect on the tragedy of so many lives lost and many others that have changed forever, to commemorate the impact they have had on our community and to console us in our collective grief," said the city.
Last month, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo released a 187-page report describing Paddock's rampage – perpetrated from a room on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino – but a possible motive has not been identified.
The murderer's brother, Eric Paddock, told investigators that he thought his brother or sister was fed up with life and that he wanted to go out with as much notoriety as possible, according to the report.
Lombardo's team determined that Paddock was an isolated gunman, who had not disclosed his intentions to anyone until the five-minute shootout in the 15-acre area where about 22,000 people had gathered for the festival. Paddock is killed before the SWAT agents storm his room, authorities said.
More than 500 people were injured in the attack.
