Saturday's Global Citizen Festival in Manhattan's Central Park turned out to be a dramatic evening. a fallen barrier caused a fright of shooting and a panic of mass at a given moment. But Janet Jackson proved that the show had to continue – and continue – taking the stage soon after.
More than 60,000 enthusiastic spectators spent their evening in the park for the seventh edition of the Global Citizen Festival, which followed a week-long meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York and encouraged citizens to end global poverty by 2030. At night, festival stars Janelle Monáe, Shawn Mendes, John Legend and Cardi B set up energetic and thoughtful sets, punctuated by calls to action.
"It was a lot of energy. For my health, we must mitigate this, "commented an enthusiastic Cardi B in the middle of his set, before embarking on a short speech on the importance of active citizenship. "I'm going to keep it real. We Americans are spoiled, "she said. "We have the right to vote and no one can take it from us unless you are a criminal."
She presented a video message of former First Lady Michelle Obama, then resumed her "Bodak Yellow" tube.
The music was interspersed with speeches from politicians like New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (who was booed at the entrance), event organizers Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness. Celebrities like Selma Director Ava DuVernay, Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy and actors such as Katie Holmes, Mark Ruffalo and Rami Malek have all addressed issues ranging from mass incarceration to the problem of using plastics to global education.
Just after sundown, the sound of a fallen barrier triggered the spectators' fears, with hundreds of participants rushing to the exits, convinced that an active shooter was present – and encouraged to bow to the police.
Chris Martin, a Global Citizen regular over the years, tried to calm the anxiety of the crowd as hundreds of confused participants crowded the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, just outside the park. "No one is trying to hurt anyone" Said Martin. "Are you all safe, okay? I just wanted to tell you that.
Once the order was reinstated at the festival site, Janet Jackson took the stage for a catchy performance of choreography, tackling some of the best songs of her career as "All For You" and "Rhythm" Nation". She even brought rapper Q-Tip in a surprise appearance.
"There are a lot of hit songs," she said at one point. She also took a short break to talk passionately about the abuse. "Like millions of other women, I know about harassment. I know about verbal abuse. I know physical violence. I know the abuse of power. I'm sick, I'm pushed back, I'm exasperated by the double standards that continue to [put] women as second-class citizens, "she said. "Enough, guys, enough. Enough of injustice. Pretty bigotry. Abuse and silly prejudices must stop and stop now. Equality is our request. The action is our answer. Let's go. "
Finally, The Weeknd closed the evening with his own short set before calling one night.
