President Uhuru Kenyatta met on Sunday with Prince William Arthur, Duke of Cambridge, who paid him a courtesy call at State House in Nairobi.

Their individual meeting focused mainly on wildlife conservation.

The Duke of Cambridge, accompanied by British High Commissioner to Kenya, Nic Hailey, informed President Kenyatta of the conference on illegal wildlife trade, to be held in London on October 11 and 12.

The meeting between Prince William and President Kenyatta concludes a seven-day tour of Africa, which then traveled to Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya.

The prince is the boss of the Royal African Society, a long-time institution dedicated to promoting Africa in the UK.

He is also president of United for Wildlife, an organization that fights illegal wildlife trade, as well as the sponsor of Tusk, a UK-based charity that promotes wildlife conservation in Africa.

The death of elephants, rhinos and other animals has dealt a blow to Kenya's tourism industry, which is among the richest sources of revenue.

Poaching remains a significant threat although the government has taken measures such as the use of sniffer dogs and trackers and the heavy sentence imposed on offenders.

In March, Kenya stepped up its fight against the ivory trade by signing a petition calling on the European Union (EU) to ban ivory trade and close the markets.

Secretary of the Cabinet of the Environment, Keriako Tobiko, signed the petition on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta at a ceremony in Kasane, Botswana.

Kenya joined 32 African countries that signed the petition.
