BERLIN – German police have arrested seven men suspected of forming an "extreme right-wing terrorist organization" in the eastern city of Chemnitz and planning attacks on foreigners and political enemies. said Monday officials.

Six men, all German citizens between the ages of 20 and 30, were arrested on Monday by tactical police units in Saxony, in the state where Chemnitz is located, and in Bavaria, state prosecutors said in a statement.

The two men formed a group called "Revolution Chemnitz", as well as a seventh suspect arrested last month in a separate case. The seventh man, identified only as a 31-year-old German citizen, Christian K., for reasons of confidentiality, would have been the leader of the group. He was arrested last month.

Prosecutors said the men wanted to "carry out violent and armed attacks against foreigners and political enemies" as part of a plan to overthrow the German democratic order.

Five of the men – Christian K. and four others only identified as Sten E., Martin H., Marcel W. and Sven W. – allegedly attacked several foreigners in the center of Chemnitz on September 14, armed with bottles, weighted "sap "Gloves and an electric stun device. Prosecutors said the attack was a "test" for another attack that men had planned for October 3, the national day of German unity.

Frauke Koehler, spokeswoman for federal prosecutors, said there was no evidence so far that the group was motivated by the murder of a German in Chemnitz in August. Anti-foreign violence erupted in the city in the days following the murder. A 23-year-old Syrian is suspected of homicide and an Iraqi policeman is still wanted.

A kosher restaurant was also attacked on the sidelines of a protest, masked men throwing stones and bottles and shouting "Jewish pig, get out of Germany".

German Justice Minister Katarina Barley has cited the arrest as further evidence of the threat posed by right-wing extremists after the conviction of members of the Freital group and the National Socialist Underground earlier this year.

"If the allegations are further substantiated, the investigators will have managed to make a significant blow to far-right terrorism," she told the Funke press group.
