A man accused of murdering his four-year-old brother by firing him from a seven-storey building said, "I finally became a criminal."
Twenty-year-old Shawn Smith was celebrating reporters as he was escorted from NYPD's 70th constituency in Brooklyn on Saturday as he was apparently smiling at outside journalists.
The New York Daily News reported that when asked if Smith intended to kill his brother, who called Shimron, he replied "not really".
Shimron died earlier in the day after Smith allegedly threw the roof of the building at Flatlands, Brooklyn, where they lived, and then into a concrete yard, far below.
The neighbors said they heard a loud bang when the alleged murder took place.
Smith, who was described as mentally ill, reportedly reported a police car and said, "Can I talk to you? I have to tell you something.
After being told to wait for the police to handle another call, Smith would have said so – then he said, "I think my brother was hurt.

After driving to the scene of the alleged murder, the officers found Shimron's lifeless body.
The boy was declared dead on the scene.
Neighbor Benny Isakajv told CBS2 that Smith had schizophrenia, adding, "I guess it got him the best."
Another resident, Donna Hayward, told the station, "I have a kid myself. I can not understand someone who takes my child and throws him off the roof like that.
"It's tearing me apart. It hurts me basically to hear it. "
Smith, who arrived in the United States from Guyana less than a year ago, has been charged with second degree murder and is being held without bail.
