The good news is that the Browns won a game last week for the first time since December 2016. The bad news is that with very little imagination, this team could be 4-0 instead of 1-2 -1. But Sunday's defeat in Oakland may be the longest, as the Browns felt the officials were not doing them any favors.
The most striking example came with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter, Cleveland leading with 42-34. On the 3rd and 2nd goals of the 17-year-old Browns, Carlos Hyde led the ball for what looked like two yards. The chains have even been brought on the ground to confirm as much. But in less than two minutes, the head of the NFL Headquarters broadcast in New York always glances. And looking closer, Hyde had come just short.
The Browns were forced to throw a blow. Six games later, the Raiders tied the game and won in overtime.
"They called a first win," said Hyde after the match, via Cleveland.com. "I do not know what they saw."

Left Guard Joel Bitonio had a similar tone.
"Honestly, 100%, I did not think there was a chance that it would be knocked down," he said. … "I was a few meters from him, I thought it was a first game."
Jarvis Landry was also baffled by the decision.
"Listen, it's a terrible call," he said. "But at the end of the day, we can blame the referees, we can blame so many reasons why it did not work, but it was difficult."

But the league seemed confident in the turnaround. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has spoken with the senior vice president of the NFL. officiating Al Riveron Sunday night.
It was actually a simple process. From a certain point of view, Riveron could see that when Hyde's wrist was finished, his elbow was also lowered. From another angle, Riveron could see that when Hyde's wrist was lowered (and thus the elbow was finished), the ball was well below the line to win.
"The angles certainly gave me the perspective and the perspective that it was short," Riveron said.

This is unlikely to dispel the Browns' concerns. But that was not the only highly questionable call of the game. Midway through the fourth quarter, while the Browns had a one-point lead, it was not inexplicable.

And this game was declared dead even though Marshawn Lynch, who remains the toughest man to face in the NFL, had not been approached and his lead was unhindered.
We are not sure that the calls are bad during a party, but the Browns did not lose because Hyde did not deserve a first try. Mayfield had four turnovers, including a choice of six, and the Raiders spoiled their chances (Martavis Bryant dropped a WIDE-OPEN touchdown in the first period).
In other words: yes, the arbitration was lacking but the excuses are for the losers. The denouement will not change anything and the Browns must prepare for Sunday's meeting against the Ravens, who are tied at the top of the division with the Bengals.
