A 20-year-old man was arrested by New York City authorities, accused of throwing his 4-year-old brother to death from the top of a seven-story building in Brooklyn.
PEOPLE confirms that Shawn Smith, who immigrated from Guiana to America last December, was charged with murder for the murder of his brother, Shimron.
According to a statement from the NYPD, the incident occurred early Saturday morning around 3:30 am in the Flatlands section of the borough.
According to the authorities, about 45 minutes after the alleged crime, Smith reported police patrolling the neighborhood.
"When they arrived, the police saw a 4-year-old man, unconscious and unresponsive, in the courtyard of the building," the statement said.
"EMS responded to the location and pronounced the death of the child on the scene," the statement said. "A 20-year-old man (brother of the deceased) was detained."

Police continue to investigate this deadly incident.
Smith has been charged with murder for the alleged murder of his younger brother, Shimron.
Police said Smith confessed to throwing his little brother out of the roof.
The investigators still do not know what motivated the actions against Smith.
When he was taken out of the 70th district, Smith spoke to reporters: "I finally became a criminal!"
Smith is still waiting for his indictment.
It was not clear Monday that he had retained the services of a lawyer.
