Fabrizio Stabile, 29, of Ventnor, Atlantic County, was hospitalized with a rare brain infection after swimming a few days earlier in a wave pool in Waco, Texas.
It was not until a few days later that Stabile suffered from a series of severe migraines that persisted for a few days. His mother finally found Stabile incoherent and unable to get out of bed and quickly brought him to the Medical Center in Atlantic City.
Doctors originally believed that Stabile had contracted bacterial meningitis. But he did not respond to treatment or medications for meningitis. After almost a week in the hospital, he was finally diagnosed with Naegleria fowleri.

Stabile died on Friday, September 21, after being declared a brain dead.
The infection, which has been reported only 34 times in the last 10 years in the United States, contracts as fresh water ingested through the nose, which spreads to the brain, causing swelling and, in the most cases, an eminent death. The amoeba mortality rate is 97%, according to the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control. Here is more information about the infection.
The BSR Cable Park complex had been closed since Sunday while the CDC was testing the amoeba.
