When I watch a show, I want to be an active spectator, assuming the topic deserves to be examined. With the good, complex television series, I want to interpret, analyze and analyze symbols – the doctoral approach of Peak TV. But I do not want to control the story. Do you?
Netflix is about to allow us to model the plot according to our whims. In an episode of the upcoming season of "Black Mirror", we will have the opportunity to choose from alternative scenarios. The episode will evolve according to our particular choices. And having chosen a bow to watch and finished the episode, we can go back and choose other arches to follow.
It does not matter. I wish that Netflix does not realize this experience with one of my favorite series. I guess it's the video game effect, to a great extent. Many young viewers are used to interactive television because they play a lot of games. And reality contest lovers also like participation because they vote for the winners. The directors of scripted television thus wonder if these same people would like to participate in comedy and drama. HBO has also explored the interactive approach with "Mosaic", but only in coordination with their application.
I am a fan of the "on demand" approach to know when and where I look. But I do not want my requirements to change the intrigues. Storytelling is the work of writers and animators, not that of inexperienced schlepps. Charlie Brooker, the creator of "Black Mirror," and his writers have done a good job for four seasons and I want them to continue. I want them to engage in one direction, not write and produce four different options. And if I do not like their choices, I can enjoy the only good interactive activity: change channels.
