The missing passenger, previously believed to be safe, was found dead on Monday after divers searched the submerged plane, Air Niugini said.

The airline had previously stated that the missing person had the plane that crashed into Chuuk Lagoon last Friday and disappeared after.

"It is with deep sadness that I confirm that the body of a passenger has been discovered by divers," Air Niugini's CEO Tahawar Durrani said in a statement. "This is the unrecognized passenger of the plane."

The airline is working to join the family of the man and to arrange to repatriate his remains, said the statement.

The airline said 47 people on board were safe

On the morning of September 28, Air Niguini Flight 73 landed shortly before the runway at Chuuk International Airport. According to the airline, the airline's Boeing 737 carried 35 passengers and 12 crew members.

The airline initially said that the 47 people on board had evacuated the plane safely. The residents of Chuuk quickly helped evacuate, using boats to transport people from the plane to the landing.

Witnesses said that in the hour after the crash, the plane sank in the Chuuk lagoon. The cause of the crash remains to be officially determined. In the days following the accident, Air Niugini said the first reports reported "very poor visibility at the time due to bad weather". A tropical disturbance passed by Chuuk on the day of the accident.

Divers scoured the submerged aircraft over the weekend and the airline issued a statement that, while one of the passengers was untraceable, he was seen coming out of the bus. ;plane.

The search for the missing passenger continued on Monday, when a body was found.

However, three days after the accident, another search of the wreckage revealed the body of the missing passenger.

The identity of the man was not revealed and the airline did not specify exactly where the body had been found.
