The effects of the magnitude 7.5 earthquake and the 18-foot tsunami that rocked Indonesia this weekend are still being assessed.
A series of earthquakes shook Friday the city of Palu, Indonesia. But it was the shock of the earthquakes of 7.5 that triggered the tsunami and left Palu and its devastated surroundings.
Officials said the current death toll is well over 800, but the number is expected to increase.
The New York Times also reported that search and rescue efforts were further complicated by the lack of heavy equipment, forcing people to search the rubble with their hands.
According to the New York Times, the special buoys placed at the water to monitor the waves have not worked properly for six years and have not alerted anyone of the wave that announces.
