PHOENIX – Deandre Ayton could be the next big NBA man in the middle.
Choice # 1 had its dominant debut Monday night, finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds and three shots blocked in the Phoenix Suns' 106-102 loss to the Sacramento Kings.
The opening opener of the two teams presented the first two choices of the most recent version. Duke's Marvin Bagley III came off the Sacramento bench for seven points in 25 minutes.
Ayton, Bagley's former teammate in high school, seems a little more ready for the NBA. The former Arizona star jumped high for alley-oop and showed a nice touch with a hook, finishing 9-16 from the ground and 6-8 from the free throw line.
Devin Booker, the Suns goalkeeper, who had surgery on his right hand a little over two weeks ago, should miss training camp and pre-season, but that does not mean to say that he is resting on his laurels.
Sacramento Kings' coach Dave Joerger hopes his team will be more successful this season and plans to give his fast leader De Aaron Fox all the space he needs.

Joel Embiid, perhaps the current major league player, Monday matched another top 10 center in the repechage, Mo Bamba of Orlando. Embiid kept Philadelphia unbeaten with 21 points in the last 76er match before heading to China for a pair of games against Dallas.
Yogi Ferrell had 26 points on 9 shots out of 14, including 6 out of 9 to 3, and Willie Cauley-Stein added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Sacramento.
Josh Jackson added 17 points and six assists for Phoenix, and TJ Warren scored 16 points on 6 shots of 7.
Ayton missed his last four attempts and scored two goals out of four with an offensive foul at the last minute.
kings: Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee), Kosta Koufos (hamstring), Iman Shumpert (calf) and Nemanja Bjelica (knee) did not play. Harry Giles III, who missed all of last season after being selected 20th overall in the 2017 draft, scored 14 points. … Bagley shot 2-for-7 and took two rebounds.
Suns: Mikal Bridges, the 10th overall pick in the June draft, did not score with a rebound in 12 minutes. Devin Booker, who had an operation on his right hand last month, did not play. We expect that it will miss all the pre-season but be ready for the start of the regular season.
