Even though about a third of the league was inactive, the Big Ten began to make its way.
The state of Ohio is clearly the best team, winning a road victory in conditions unfavorable to Penn State. And the Nittany Lions could become No. 2, thanks to the courage and regularity of quarterback Trace McSorley.
And after uneven performances from Michigan and Michigan State, the other contenders still look a little flawed and one or two steps back.
In this week's standings:
1. STATE OF THE OHIO (5-0)
The Buckeyes led 13-7 at the half, the offensive line began to be whipped and quarterback Dwayne Haskins looked like a freshman. But the Ohio State rallied after the 26-14 deficit in the fourth quarter at Happy Valley, the surest sign that it was the Big Ten team to beat. Haskins finished with three assists in TD and has a lot of playmakers around him. The Buckeyes' defense dropped nearly 500 yards in total, but early stiffened in the red zone to retain OSU, and played two big games late. (Last week: 1)
