SAN DIEGO – The mother of a 13-year-old boy who suffered a big shark bite while fishing for lobster in California said Monday that it was a miracle that his son had survived.
Keane Webre-Hayes ate a cup of noodles and a donut. She speaks and is alert, said her mother, Ellie Hayes. He is eager to start playing baseball again and return to the ocean.
Someone brought him a mask and a snorkel at the Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, and he said that he was not afraid of the water.
"He said:" Mom, the chances are so much slimmer in the second mouthful, "she told laughing laughter at the journalists who had heard her speak publicly about the boyfriend. Saturday attack for the first time.
Hayes said she was standing on a cliff in the parking lot when she heard the commotion, even though she did not see the shark.
His son was with a friend diving into about 9 feet of water about 150 meters off the San Diego suburb of Encinitas when he was attacked. The witnesses estimated that the shark was about 11 feet long, but the type was not known.
A trio of rescuers took the boy who bleed a lot to a kayak and lobbied. He was flown to the hospital.
"We were very lucky and we know it, and we are very grateful," said Ellie Hayes alongside her husband and Keane's father-in-law, her voice muffled by her love for her son.
Dr. Tim Fairbanks, Rady's chief of pediatric surgery, said Webre-Hayes was still in a serious state of what he described as a very large and very deep bite to the chest wall. He tore the upper back, shoulder, torso, face and ears, but did not damage his vascular system.
"Keane wants you to know that he has all of his members and that he will return home completely intact," Fairbanks said. "We are delighted to be where we are now, but we still need to get him over the finish line and make it better."
Hayes was reluctant to talk in detail about the incident but said his son insisted he wanted to dive into lobster.
He said, "Mom, I'm going to make you a lobster dinner tonight," so he's getting one, "she said.
Hayes said that the only word she would choose to describe her son is nice, but she also showed courage, strength, and athlete.
"He is a warrior," she says. "I did not know that he was so good swimmer."
