Thailand has announced the indefinite closure of Maya Bay to repair the environmental damage to the idyllic destination of the film "The Beach".

Yesterday, the The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation said Maya Bay would remain closed to tourism until the ecosystem of the area is fully restored. How long it will take has not yet been determined.

Originally, the department had ordered the closure of the bay from June 1 to September 30, but an additional month had been added before the decision was finally made to close it indefinitely.

Worapoj Lomlim, head of the Nopparat Ara-Koh Phi Phi National Park where the Maya Bay is located, said that a period of four or six months was simply not enough for the reefs of Damaged coral are recovering from the impact of tourism. agreed to close the bay indefinitely.

He added that the Ministry planted over 1000 coral reefs in the Maya Bay area, and they need more time to develop fully, Channel 7 reported.
