In a 1983 letter published by the New York Times on Tuesday, Brett Kavanaugh, a Supreme Court nominee, suggests that he and his friends should warn neighbors that they are "heinous drunkards" before their trip to the "Beach" Week. "
The Times, who reviewed a copy of the handwritten note, said Kavanaugh had acknowledged that the letter was his.
"It's a note I wrote for organizing 'Beach Week' in the summer of 1983," Kavanaugh told the newspaper, through his lawyers, refusing to comment further.
The letter describes the group's plans for a trip to Ocean City, Maryland, where Kavanaugh and his friends rented an apartment to hold parties. He sets out the intentions of inviting the girls and "begging" them to stay.
"I think we are unanimous in saying that all the girls we can beg to stay here are welcomed with openness …" reads the letter. "Anyway, I think we're all ready."
Kavanaugh ends the letter by signing "FFFFF, Bart".
A book by Mark Judge, a friend of Kavanaugh, Wasted: The stories of a drunkard of Generation X, refers to a "Bart O'Kavanaugh" who "vomited into someone else 's car" the other night.
During his testimony before the Judiciary Committee of the Senate last week, Mr. Kavanaugh declined to say whether "Bart O'Kavanaugh" had actually referred to it.
The postscript of the letter, however, seems to support this conclusion:
"P.S. It would probably be a good idea on Saturday. on the 18th to warn the neighbors that we are noisy and hateful drunkards with prolific pukers among us ".
Three women accused Kavanaugh of having aggressed or harassed drunk, as well as other women, during his years in high school and at university. He denied these allegations.
