Georgia has sacked Adam Sasser from his baseball program after investigating his charge of using a racial insult while he was attending the UGA football match against Tennessee this weekend.
"Georgia University's senior first baseman, Adam Sasser, has been fired from the Bulldog baseball team, according to Sports Director, Greg McGarity, and the head coach, Scott Stricklin, "reads in a brief press release.
After the indictment, the university announced Monday it had opened an anti-discrimination / anti-harassment investigation into the incident through the school's Equal Opportunity Office.
"I want to emphasize again that we are not giving up discriminatory behavior," said McGarity in a statement released Monday.
Stricklin added: "I expect every member of our team to behave at all times in a manner that respects the highest standards and values of the University of Georgia, and it is disappointing that this does not happen. "
According to various reports, Sasser, a second selection of the All-SEC team in 2018, was reported to have directed racial slurs against Justin Fields, a quarterback of the Bulldogs football team. A student from Georgia who said she heard what Sasser had said and said to the Dawg nation:
In a Twitter message, she confirmed to DawgNation that Sasser was the offending party and that he was screaming: [N-word] in the game 'throughout the fourth quarter'.
Georgia football coach Kirby Smart was questioned about the situation during his Tuesday press conference. He said he had not spoken to the team about it, but he had dismissed Fields. Smart said, "Justin is great."
"If what I've read and heard is true, it's really unacceptable behavior that does not fit with what we are in Georgia," said Smart. "We are trying to build a program on tolerance and mutual respect. You can not control what other people are saying, but the hope is that the people who are part of our program and attend our games share the same convictions as we do.
"It's sad that something like this is happening. I'm disappointed. But that does not affect our family here, our unity here and our children have been great. It's not something I had to deal with them. I approached him with Justin. This is the most important thing. "
